Approvals from your phone

Runs often reach their approval gate while you’re away from your desk. With two pieces set up you can handle them from your phone:

  • ntfy pushes a notification the moment a run needs approval (or fails).
  • Remote access serves Jimothy’s UI to your phone over Tailscale, so you can read the plan, the review and the logs, and tap Approve.
  1. Install the ntfy app on your phone (App Store / Google Play).
  2. In the app, subscribe to a new topic with a hard-to-guess name, e.g. jimothy-7f3k2q9x, on ntfy.sh (or your own ntfy server).
  3. In Jimothy: Notifications → Add channel → ntfy (phone push).
  4. URL: https://ntfy.sh/jimothy-7f3k2q9x. Bearer token: only if your topic is access-protected.
  5. Events: keep Approval needed, Run failed and Trigger errors; untick Run succeeded if you don’t want those on your phone.
  6. Pipelines: leave none selected for all pipelines, or pick the ones you care about.
  7. Click Send test. Your phone should show Jimothy test notification. Then Save.

Approval notifications arrive with high priority and a ✋ tag, titled Approval needed · run #42, with the step name and the approval message as the body. Failures are high priority with an ❌ tag. Tapping a notification opens the issue URL (when the run has one).

  1. Install Tailscale on your computer and your phone and sign both in to the same tailnet.
  2. Optional but recommended: in the Tailscale admin console, open DNS and enable HTTPS Certificates.
  3. In Jimothy: Settings → Remote access, switch on Use Jimothy from your phone and other devices on your Tailscale network.
  4. A QR code appears with an address like https://my-mac.tail1234.ts.net:7443.
  5. With Tailscale connected on your phone, scan the QR code with the camera and open the link. You’re signed in.
  6. Add it to your home screen (iOS: Share → Add to Home Screen). It then opens like an app.

Details and troubleshooting: Remote access.

When the ntfy notification arrives:

  1. Open Jimothy from your home screen.
  2. The top bar shows ✋ and the number of runs waiting; tap it to open Runs (or open Dashboard → Needs your approval).
  3. Open the run. The approval banner shows the message; above it, the graph; below, each step’s Output (the plan, the review verdict) and Logs.
  4. If the step offers options, tick the ones you want (tap the arrow to read one in full). Optionally type a comment, then tap Approve or Reject.

The run continues on your computer immediately. If it then opens a PR, the run page shows a PR #… button that opens on your phone.

Make approvals easy to judge on a small screen

Section titled “Make approvals easy to judge on a small screen”

Put what you need to decide into the approval message; it’s shown in the banner and in the notification body:

Approve to push {{run.branch}} and open a PR for {{issue.key}}: {{issue.title}}
Review verdict:
{{steps.review.output | truncate:1200}}

Also useful:

  • Keep the review step’s output short (ask for a summary before the verdict line).
  • Name steps clearly; notification titles use step names.

Everything that opens something on the computer is hidden or refused remotely: folder pickers, Open workspace in editor, Reveal workspace folder, and managing remote access itself. To inspect the actual code changes from your phone, rely on the review output or open the PR once it exists.
